Structuring

A portfolio with a structure around it.

For families who want their investments held for the next generation, not just the next quarter. Intrasia Management builds the trust or foundation. Intrasia Wealth manages what is inside it.

Why structure at all

Three things a structure gives a family.

Succession. A portfolio held personally passes through probate in every country where you hold assets. A portfolio held in a trust or foundation passes according to the deed, without probate, to the people you named, on the terms you set.

Protection. Assets settled into a properly constituted structure are no longer yours to lose. They are held for beneficiaries, which matters for business owners, professionals with liability exposure and families in politically uncertain countries.

Continuity. When a family's members live in three countries and its patriarch moves to a fourth, a Mauritius structure gives the wealth one legal home that does not move when people do.

How the two firms work together

  1. Design. Intrasia Management advises on the structure with your tax and legal advisers and drafts the deed or charter.
  2. Establishment. The trust or foundation is constituted; Intrasia Management acts as trustee or council member and administrator under its FSC Management Company licence.
  3. Mandate. The trustee or council appoints Intrasia Wealth under a written discretionary or advisory mandate agreed with the family.
  4. Custody. A custodian account is opened in the name of the structure; existing holdings are transferred in without being sold.
  5. Reporting. The family receives one quarterly pack: portfolio performance from Intrasia Wealth, structure accounts from Intrasia Management.

Structuring services are provided by Intrasia Management, a separately licensed company in the Intrasia Group. Intrasia Wealth does not give legal or tax advice. Mauritius trusts and Mauritius foundations are described in detail on Intrasia Management's site.

Questions we are asked

Frequently asked

Does Intrasia Wealth set up the trust?
No. Trusts and foundations are established and administered by Intrasia Management, the Group's FSC-licensed management company. Intrasia Wealth manages the investment portfolio held inside the structure. You deal with one relationship; two licensed entities do the work.
Trust or foundation: which is right for my family?
A trust suits families from common-law countries who are comfortable with trustees holding legal title. A foundation, a separate legal person with its own council, often suits families from civil-law countries or the Gulf who prefer a corporate-style body. Both can hold a managed portfolio. See our comparison below.
Can the trust hold my existing portfolio?
Yes. Assets can be settled into the structure and the custodian account re-registered in the trustee's or foundation's name. We coordinate the transfer so the portfolio does not need to be sold and rebought.
Who controls the investments once assets are in a trust?
The trustee holds legal title and appoints Intrasia Wealth under a discretionary or advisory mandate agreed with the family. A protector can be given a veto over changes to the investment manager or mandate.
Is a Mauritius trust confidential?
Trusts and foundations are not on any public register in Mauritius. Only the regulator and, under exchange-of-information agreements, tax authorities have access.
