Banking

Banking in Mauritius, opened properly.

For individuals relocating, families holding wealth here and companies formed here. Intrasia Wealth introduces you to the right bank and carries the application through, and looks after the portfolio that sits alongside it.

What to expect

Banks in Mauritius are careful. That is the point.

Mauritius is a member of the OECD Inclusive Framework and applies international standards on anti-money-laundering and tax transparency. Its banks are correspondingly thorough about who they take on. A well-prepared application, with source of wealth and source of funds documented, is the difference between a few weeks and a few months.

Who provides the serviceIntrasia Wealth, as an introduction and a prepared application. We hold no banking licence and never hold client money; the bank decides on every application.

How the introduction works

  1. Matching. Which bank suits your profile: currency needs, residence, company type, and the bank's appetite for your country and industry.
  2. Preparation. We assemble the file with you so the bank receives a complete application first time.
  3. Application. Submitted to the bank, with follow-up on its questions.
  4. Opening. Account opened, online banking set up, initial deposit made.
  5. Alongside. If you hold a portfolio with us, the custodian account is opened in parallel, so cash for living or operations and capital for investment each have their home from day one.

Bank account and custodian account

The two are different and most clients need both. The bank account holds cash, pays bills and receives income. The custodian account holds the investment portfolio in your name, under a mandate with Intrasia Wealth, with a regulated custodian. Keeping the two separate is what makes the portfolio independent of any single bank, and it is how our quarterly reports reconcile cleanly to your statements.

Banking introductions are provided by Intrasia Wealth. We are an investment adviser and portfolio manager, not a bank, and the account is always with the bank, in your name. Relocating? See Relocating to Mauritius. Forming a company? See Mauritius company formation.

Questions we are asked

Frequently asked

Can a non-resident open a bank account in Mauritius?
Yes. Mauritian banks open personal and corporate accounts for non-residents, subject to their due diligence. There is no exchange control, and accounts can be held in US dollars, euros, sterling and other major currencies, as well as local currency for day-to-day spending.
Does Intrasia open the account?
No. Intrasia Wealth holds no banking licence and never holds client money. We introduce you to the bank, prepare the application with you and follow it through. The bank decides whether to open the account, on its own terms.
How long does it take?
Typically a few weeks from a complete application for a personal account, and longer for a company, depending on the bank and the complexity of ownership. Incomplete source-of-funds documentation is the usual cause of delay.
Is a bank account the same as the custodian account for my portfolio?
No. A bank account holds cash and makes payments. Your investment portfolio is held in a separate account with a regulated custodian, in your name, which Intrasia Wealth manages under your mandate. Most clients have both: a bank account for living costs or company operations, and a custodian account for the portfolio.
Will my account be reported to my home tax authority?
Under the Common Reporting Standard, Mauritian banks report accounts held by non-residents to the tax authority of the account holder's country of residence. Nothing about banking in Mauritius reduces your obligation to declare.

Bring the documents. We will bring the bank.

One conversation covers the account, the residence or company behind it, and the portfolio alongside it.
